Operations performs the regular services and repair work needed to maintain a clean, attractive, safe, and environmentally sound environment for the students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Columbia University. The department is responsible for the maintenance of 13 million square feet of built space in 246 buildings including 7,300 apartments on and in the vicinity of the Morningside Heights campus, its outdoor areas, and Baker Field facilities.
Campus Operations
Campus Operations is responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of academic and administrative buildings on the Morningside Heights campus, the upkeep of grounds, and special event support.
Residential and Commercial Operations
Residential and Commercial Operations oversees the 156 buildings that comprise the University Apartment Housing (UAH) inventory and that are used primarily to house faculty and graduate students; the operation of the University's 31 undergraduate residences; and the operation of all commercial space associated with the Morningside Heights campus. The department works closely with the Provost’s Office, the graduate and professional schools and the School of General Studies in managing the assignment and leasing of residential spaces in the UAH inventory as well as all parking spaces on the Morningside Heights campus.
Plant Engineering and Utilities
The Plant Engineering and Utilities department oversees the University’s physical plant, including building heating and cooling, utility systems, fire safety, and elevator maintenance, and is responsible for comprehensive energy management.
