Preserving Studebaker's History

18 Apr 07

Studebaker is being renovated in collaboration with the State Historic Preservation Office as well as a historic consultant.  Here are some of the ways the University is respecting the exterior and interior historic fabric of the building:

  • Brand-new energy-efficient windows that closely mimic the original windows
  • Partition set-backs from the window so that the building can preserve more of its factory-like look and people won't see partitions from the street level
  • Storage of various items unique to Studebaker, like a portion of a ramp railing, an old window and some floor tiles
  • Preservation of some of the bases that surround the columns
  • Exposure of certain pipes, ductwork, and wall bricks to maintain the character of the building
  • Creation of a new ADA-compliant entrance that will have a glass panel with an inscription that indicates the historic nature of the building (previous/current tenants like Studebaker, Bordens, and Alexander Doll)

See the Difference

Studebaker's new windows respect the building's original architecture, while providing modern energy efficiency and noise resistance.
